American Red Cross Encourages You to Be a Hero Again this September 11th
In the hours and days following the horrific attacks of September 11, 2001, thousands of Americans lined up to donate blood, hoping to help victims and to prepare our nation for the turbulent times that remained ahead. The outpouring of compassion and patriotism across America still stands strong in all of our minds. The unprecedented response by citizens to help our American community was inspirational. The American Red Cross hopes to draw on that spirit as the tenth anniversary of the tragedy nears.
As we once again prepare to remember those lost with a National Day of Service and Remembrance, the Red Cross encourages people to consider rolling up their sleeves to give the gift of life in honor of the victims. The September 11 Memorial Blood Drive will be held on Friday, September 9, from 10am – 6pm at the Olean Center Mall. The first 300 presenting blood donors will receive a commemorative 9/11 t-shirt and pin. In addition, there will be free food and prizes, and a live WPIG radio broadcast.

The Southern Tier community has demonstrated over the past ten years that they are a community of people that truly respond when asked to pull together to honor the heroes of September 11, and collect blood for hospital patients currently in need. Hopefully everyone will come together again this year on the tenth anniversary and help us pay tribute to the men and women who lost their lives that tragic day and help save the lives of hospital patients in need.”
There is a constant need for blood, not just when disaster strikes. In fact, someone in this country requires a blood transfusion every two seconds and one out of every three people will require a blood transfusion at some point in their life. When tragedy does occur in our community, it is the blood already on our shelves that can help those in need. That is why it is imperative to always have a strong, stable supply of blood. This is only possible with the regular commitment of generous volunteer blood donors.
The New York-Penn Blood Services Region provides lifesaving blood to more than 120 hospitals and must have 1,200 people give blood and platelets each weekday to meet hospital demand. Accident victims as well as patients with cancer, sickle cell disease, blood disorders and other illnesses receive lifesaving transfusions every day. There is no substitute for blood and volunteer donors are the only source.
Eligible volunteer blood donors are asked to please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make appointments. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission), meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on their height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to give blood. Identification is required at the time of donation. Walk-ins are welcome.

The Hinsdale American Legion is located on 15 acres of property directly off NY S.R. 16 along side the Ischua Creek. The location is easily identifiable by the F-4 Phantom Fighter Jet sitting in front of the post. The location offers ample space for parking and camping alike over an expansive area of park-like grounds running along the Ischua Creek. There is a playground for children, lighted horseshoe pits, and a covered pavilion available. The Legion clubroom is open to members and sponsored guests, providing legal beverages as well as a food menu.
WHEN:
Friday, Sept. 9th - Camping and Boating Registration begin at 3:00pm
Saturday, Sept 10th- Boats and entrants to be transported and in the water by 11:00am
Sunday, Sept. 11th- Duck Race
WHAT:
An amateur regatta to be held with any form of motorless boat running the Ischua Creek from Mill st. in Ischua to behind the Hinsdale American Legion (approx. 7.3 miles except length may be shorter due to low water or inclement weather). The Ischua Creek is classified as one of the few Class A trout streams by the NY State Dept. of Environmental Conservation. The stream is home to native trout, ospreys, herons, and the American Bald Eagle. You are equally likely to see deer, bear, otter, beaver and other aquatic animals during your venture.
