It is estimated that by 2020 there will be 123 million high skill/high pay jobs available to young adults across all areas of manufacturing. However, unless we change how we expose young people to these opportunities there will only be 43 million qualified individuals to fill those vacancies. How many times have you heard someone say, “I can’t find qualified candidates to fill my open positions?” Have you ever said it?

Skills that support advanced manufacturing operations are paramount to today’s industrial revolution. Sophisticated manufacturing resource planning software, managerial accounting, CNC programming, robotic manufacturing, 3-D solid modeling, 5-axis machining centers, graphic design describe just a few of the areas in manufacturing that require advanced skills. As a manufacturing based employer you have a responsibility to support the development of our young people; they represent the future of your company.

Programs like Dream It-Do It and the Southern Tier Advanced Manufacturing Initiative (STAMI) provide the ground work for you to develop a network with area educational institutions and become involved in sparking the interest of a young person to pursue an educational path leading to a successful career in an advanced manufacturing environment.

I challenge you to participate on July 14th in my discussion about the role that manufacturers play in the development of our work force. I believe it may be one of the most important decisions you make regarding the future of your business. I will discuss the need to build networks within our educational institutions, the importance of mentoring, job shadowing and internships, the financial needs of Dream It-Do It and STAMI and the rewards of being a proactive member in work force development.

As employer’s we are looking at today’s best and brightest students to make a difference in our workplace. It’s our responsibility to expose them to the exciting work that goes on behind our doors and educate them about the opportunities available with the proper education and training. Your participation can make a difference in the lives of our youth, increase the number of skilled workers available for hire, and create a vibrant community.
